Periods . Safe Sex
Fertility & STI's
Having sex during your period does not increase the risk of pregnancy, in fact the chances of getting pregnant during your period are relatively low, HOWEVER it's not impossible...
Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for several days, so it's still possible to conceive if you have a short menstrual cycle or if your bleeding lasts longer.
Regarding sexually transmitted infections (STIs), the risk remains the same as during non-menstrual sex. It's still really important to practice safe sex by using condoms or other barrier methods, if you or your partner have multiple sexual partners or if you are not in a mutually monogamous relationship!
Comfort
Some people find that having sex during their period can feel even better due to the increased lubrication. Also, due to a fluctuation in hormones, some of us can get a proper horn on during our time of the month!
For others however, this may not be the case. Cramps, bloating and a heavy flow can make us feel far from frisky.
As always, it's important to remember that each individual and even each period is different! Try to focus on what you feel like your body needs during this time of the month. If it's sex then hop to it, but if it's switching on the Titanic with a box of tissues and a bag of Maltesers, then you do you boo x
Communication
As with any other sexual activity, open and honest communication with your partner is essential.
Discussing preferences and/or concerns helps to make sure everyone is comfortable and having the best time.
Hygiene
One of the biggest concerns around period sex is the mess.
We get it, period blood maybe isn't the most pleasant substance to have all up on you.
But sex is messy anyway! There are so many fluids and secretions that come with getting down and (literally) dirty. So if it's only the idea of a little extra mess that's stopping you, then babes pop a towel down and just get to it.
Ultimately, whether you want to have sex or not during your period is entirely your choice. Same goes for our solo love making sessions too!!
Safe sex, communication and comfort are, as always, key.
It is absolutely safe and perfectly normal to have sex during your period.
Consent practices should be exactly the same as when you're not menstruating, just as they are for any sexual activity. Remember that some may like it more or less than others. It is important not to pressure or shame your partner according to their preferences!
