Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is a vaginal infection caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina. It can not be contracted or passed on however it is more common in those who are sexually active.

Symptoms

Often those with BV experience no symptoms at all however mild symptoms can range between:

  • A strong unpleasant fishy smell

  • Watery & thin grey or green discharge

  • Burning sensation when urinating

Causes

BV is caused by an imbalance of the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria typically found in the vagina which can be brought on by any of the following:

  • New sexual partners

  • Using scented hygiene products (bath bombs & bubble bath)

  • Douching

  • Multiple Sexual partners

  • Antibiotics

Although BV is not classed as a sexually transmitted infection, an interference with the vagina’s microbiome from sexual activities is a very common cause for the onset of an infection.

Treatment & Prevention

Antibiotics are typically used to treat BV, either in the form of tablets, external or internal creams (metronidazole, clindamycin, tinidazole).

These can be prescribed by a doctor or over the counter treatments can be found in most pharmacies. Treatment is often a course of 5-7 days and it is advisable to finish the course even if symptoms ease as the infection may return.

There are also many ways in which to prevent or lower the chances of developing BV:

  • Avoiding the use of scented or harsh hygiene products

  • Cleaning sex toys properly after use

  • Using condoms

  • Avoid douching

In many cases, BV can often reoccur for a number of reasons. It is best to seek advice or consult a medical professional if BV infections become persistent.
